We are used to photography capturing reality. But what if we use a shot not as a final result, but as a canvas for creativity? Today, I want to show you how AI can completely reimagine the mood of a single frame.
For this experiment, I took a photo from the Italian island of Burano. You surely know the place—famous fishermen’s houses painted in the brightest, craziest colors. It already looks like a postcard.
But I wondered: can AI see the geometry behind these colors, or perhaps enhance the artistic effect? For this test, I used the Nano Banana Pro tool.
The first task was counter-intuitive for Burano—removing its main asset: color. I asked the AI to style the photo as a classic pencil drawing.
The result surprised me. Without the distracting colors, details came to the forefront: the uneven plaster, rooflines, cozy shutters, and laundry drying on lines. Nano Banana Pro mimicked the hatching perfectly, turning a tourist snap into an architect’s sketch.
Then, I decided to bring the color back but make it more tangible. I chose an “acrylic painting” style.
The AI didn’t just apply a filter; it simulated brushstrokes. The colors became dense and saturated, with textures characteristic of acrylics. The image stopped being a flat photo and turned into an illustration you want to touch. The houses looked even more fairytale-like, as if straight out of a children’s book.
In just a couple of minutes, I got three completely different moods from one source file. This proves that AI isn’t just a “make it pretty” button, but a powerful tool in a creator’s hands, allowing us to look at familiar things from a new angle.
